Hebrews chapter 5 begins by explaining that every high priest is selected from among the people and is appointed to represent them before god. The high priest offers gifts and sacrifices for sins on behalf of the people, and he is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and wayward because he himself is subject to weaknesses. The Scriptures then explains that Jesus Christ was also appointed by God to be a high priest, and he is able to sympathize with our weaknesses because he has been tempted in every way, just as we are. Because of this, we can approach him with confidence to receive mercy and grace in our time of need. The Scriptures then chastises his readers for being slow to understand these things, and he urges them to move beyond the basic teachings about Christ and strive for maturity in their faith.
