Dead to Sin and Alive to God: Understanding Romans 6:11
Romans 6:11 states, "Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord." This verse is a profound declaration of the believer’s identity in Christ. It emphasizes the transformation that occurs when we accept Jesus as our Savior—leaving behind the bondage of sin and stepping into a new life in Him. But what does this truly mean, and how can we apply it to our daily lives?
1. Reckoning Ourselves Dead to Sin
The word "reckon" in this verse means to consider, count, or regard as true. Paul instructs believers to see themselves as completely separated from sin. This does not mean that we will never struggle with temptation, but sin no longer has dominion over us (Romans 6:14). Through Christ’s death, the power of sin was broken, and we are called to live in that victory.
When we understand this truth, we stop seeing sin as an inevitable part of our lives and begin to recognize our authority over it. Temptations may arise, but they do not have to control us. Instead of yielding to our old nature, we can rely on God’s strength to overcome.
2. Alive to God Through Christ
Paul does not stop at being dead to sin—he reminds us that we are also alive to God. This means that our new life is not just about avoiding sin but about actively living in the presence and power of God. Through Jesus Christ, we have a renewed purpose, a relationship with our Creator, and the ability to walk in righteousness.
Being alive to God means we cultivate our spiritual growth by spending time in prayer, studying His Word, and allowing the Holy Spirit to guide us. It also means we live with joy, hope, and purpose, knowing that we belong to Him.
3. Walking in Our New Identity
Understanding Romans 6:11 is not just about head knowledge—it’s about transformation. If we truly believe that we are dead to sin and alive to God, our actions should reflect this truth. This means:
Turning away from sinful habits and embracing holiness.
Trusting in God's power rather than our own strength.
Living with confidence in our identity as children of God.
Pursuing righteousness and godly living with passion and dedication.
Conclusion
Romans 6:11 is a reminder that our old life is gone, and we now belong to Christ. We are no longer slaves to sin but are alive in Him. This truth should change the way we see ourselves and the way we live daily. By embracing this new identity and relying on God’s grace, we can walk in the freedom and victory that Jesus has given us.
As you meditate on this verse, ask yourself: Am I living as someone who is truly dead to sin and alive to God? If not, today is a great day to step fully into the new life that Christ has given you!
